A new safety initiative, by the City of Ottawa, helping ensure the safety of hockey coaches and off-ice officials, is well under way. Several arenas within the city were not accessible for coaches and timekeepers without crossing the ice. As a result of recent renovations at 21 locations, player and timekeeper benches are now accessible in all but R.J. Kennedy Arena in Cumberland, which will be completed later this year.
The City of Ottawa is warning coaches, non-playing personnel and participants not to cross the ice, under any circumstance, while wearing outdoor footwear (shoes and boots). It is recommended to walk around the ice for personal safety. New signage has been posted in arenas reminding users of the danger. The City also recognizes that some participants have special needs.
